The Man Behind the Name: Ramón Castroviejo
The Castroviejo Scissors are named after the famous surgeon Dr. Ramón Castroviejo, a famous eye surgeon born in Spain in 1904. He later moved to United States where he became a leader in eye surgery, especially in corneal transplant surgeries.
Dr Castroviejo needed better tools to perform these very delicate operations. So, he worked with instruments manufacturers to create a small, sharp and easy to handle pair of scissors. These scissors were specially designed for the tiny and sensitive parts of the eyes.
Dr. Castroviejo gave the idea to surgical instruments manufacturers and helped guide the design. Because they were made for his work and used mostly in his surgeries, they were named after him. Over time these scissors became known as Castroviejo Scissors, used not only eye surgery but in many other precise surgical procedures.
Characteristics of Castroviejo Scissors
